MELTING POT
A masking material used in the glazing process across Arita, Japan – has sparked an unexpected social phenomenon within the 400-year-old Japanese porcelain village. Today, local craftsmen casually using their own delicate, traditional porcelain vessels to store latex colored with bright neon pink ink that overflows over the vessels, resulting in a viral workshop habit that has spread across nearly every local kiln..
The collection of tea pots is an exploration of this unintentional workshop subculture.
The casual repurposing of heritage porcelain as industrial storage, the viral transmission of contemporary trends among historic kilns, the aesthetic friction between over flow and refined smooth porcelain. As objects of material contrast, the tea pots pay tribute to the unscripted, human realities behind a rigid tradition.
Transforming a temporary workshop habit into a permanent intervention that disrupts and reinterprets traditional craftsmanship.
The project was born of immersive field research, with [Designer's Name] visiting various factories and kilns in Arita to document the shared habits, material overflows, and collective social dynamics of contemporary Japanese artisans.
